Sokletus

The chocolate from the Kumar family is something very special. Soklet is India's first and only tree-to-bar chocolate. Since 2005 they have been cultivating cocoa in southeast India, in Tamil Nadu, near the Indira Gandhi nature reserve. Surrounded by bananas, nutmeg, coconut and pepper, the cocoa beans grow in permaculture. The farm is operated on the basis of aquaculture and without any pesticides. These unique growing conditions give the chocolate its unique flavors.

Cocoa came to India around the 18th century, but the big cultivation boom only came in the 1960s and 70s. At this time, the British company Cadbury distributed cocoa seeds to farmers. Today, India cultivates far less than 1% of the world's cocoa. Cocoa is currently grown primarily in four states in southern India: Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Despite the difficult transition from industrial to premium cocoa, the “craft chocolate” movement is also growing in India. Some farmers have made the leap into the fine cocoa market and are now exporting their cocoa with the special Indian flavors (spicy, hot) all over the world.
